Wait 'Til Harvest

OUTSTANDING
This is the best book I have read in a very long time. It is funny, it is heartwarming and truly portrays the sacrifice, love, and dissapointment that are part of a marriage now. I laughed and I cried. It offers an excellent glimpse of rural live and pioneering. After I read it I felt grateful for all that I have and had a greater perspective and sense of happiness.

Great story of the Idaho homesteaders
Here's a book that deservedly won the Seal of the Idaho Centennial Commission. It's a well-written biography of a matriarch who lost her husband to cancer in the early 1900's and then had to raise her six children on a dry farm in the great Gentile Valley of Southeastern Idaho. Anyone who loves stories of the West and well-written biographies will enjoy this story.

A pioneering effort by Gregory Plumb!!
For anyone interested in tracking down waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest region, this book is the bible. Detailed accounts of where to locate them, maps, personal insight, the works. Whatchagot Stew: A Memoir of an Idaho Childhood With Recipes and Commentaries
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (October, 1992)
Authors: Patrick F. McManus and Patricia McManus Gass
Average review score:

Funniest cookbook ever
This cookbook has McManus's memoir at the front and recipes in the back. I made a few of the recipes when I was in college, and they all got rave reviews except for the griddle scones (maybe it was my fault since I was a new cook). The spaghetti sauce with clams wowed my Italian-American friend. I still need to get up the nerve to make the dandelion wine and other spirits. The recipe for hot dogs made by Boy Scouts had me rolling on the floor. Definitely pick this one up!

Funny book with real recipies
The book is typical McManus humor interlaced with good, bad, and ugly recipes. Always the recipes have some story and show what cooking was like when they used things like bacon grease to cook with. No doubt some of these recipes are heart stoppers but a fun book with varying types of things for campers and home cooks which have to be tried. Recipes range from simple to complex and are generally survivors of the passage of time.

Wild Thing: Backcountry Tales and Trails
Published in Paperback by Washington State Univ Pr (October, 1999)
Author: Stacy V. Gebhards
Average review score:

Superb Work By a Superb Man
Stacey has many talents of the great game of life and believe it or not, they are almost all useful to the Californian Mountainman. His book is very funny it is very hard to put it down when nature calls.

For the outdoor lover - at once philosophical and humerous.
Gebhards writes of his experiences in lucid prose expressing his love for the wilderness with philosopical insights punctuated with humerous anecdotes. He traces his enchantment with the "Wild Thing" from his boyhood in the Mississippi bottom lands to the formalization of his education at Utah State University to his employment as an Idaho fishery biologist, mule skinner, folk musician, reluctant politician, winter survivalist, camp cook, wilderness meteorologist and wild river runner. His tales are loaded with humor sometimes wry and other times raucous. A modern mountain man, Gebhards' love of the Rocky Mountain wilderness is unrelenting as it is passed on to the reader.

A Birders Guide To Idaho
I found this book very helpful in guiding me to great birding places. I found birds I had always wanted to see with relative ease. It directs you to a spot via highways and mile markers. Not only to view birds, but other hard to find wildlife, such as Mountain Goats at Farragut state park. While visiting Idaho from Wisconsin, I introduced this book to 2 local people who were amazed and took the information of where to purchase their own book. Thanks to all involved in making this book possible. It was a great christmas present to me. You won't be dissappointed to buy this book!!

Bitterbrush Country: Living on the Edge of the Land
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (01 August, 2001)
Author: Diane Josephy Peavey
Average review score:

Go West, Young Woman
Although I've read many books by and about women in the West, this is a refreshing new twist on the oft-told memoir in which the author marries a sheep and cattle rancher and grows to love the wide open and arid spaces of Southern Idaho, as well as the interesting characters she meets along the process. What's new about it? Peavey is the daughter of noted western historian Alvin Josephy, and spent every summer of her childhood at the family ranch in Joseph, Oregon. the book is a collection of her commentaries on Boise's National Public Radio station, and shows that she has inherited her father's wonderful felicity with the English language, as well as his sensitivity to issues in the contemporary West. This book belongs on one's bookshelf along with those by Terry Tempest Williams, Gretel Erlich, Kim Barnes, and Terri Hein. This is the perfect gift for those who grew up on a farm or ranch, or have just visited one!

Boise: The City and the People

Authors: Clay Morgan, Steve Bly, and Stephen Bly

Boise
It has been 20 years since I last lived in Boise. This book and its numerous color pictures, however, confirmed for me that despite intense growth, the essential character of the place remains the same. The strength of this book is the writers' obvious sensitivity to the character of the place and its people -- a sensitivity that allowed me to make this conclusion. For example, although the title says Boise, the authors, through pictures and descriptions of the rugged and beautiful Idaho outdoors, display an understanding that Idaho wilderness is inseparable from Boiseans' notions of themselves. Very much worth purchasing.

MOVING TO IDAHO
One day Ann ,Jemmy and Mama had to move to Idaho Territory. This was around the year 1849 which was when the gold rush was in Idaho. The Scotts were moving from Oregon and on the way they meet a woman, Mrs. Storkson. When they finally get to Idaho Territory, they started a restaurant. As soon as the gold rush was over, Helga,Jemmy and Ann found some silver and started a silver mine. At the end, Mama finally got married. Jemmy tried to light "giant" powder for a fire cracker, but broke all the windows in town!! I recommend this book for people who like action and adventure!
